Alfieri, The Peacemaker

“We are here today to remember a man of commitment. Of integrity. Of devotion. Ever since I was young, I was in awe of Alfieri's ability to make problems go away, to soothe our ills, to fix every problem I faced. I thought such a thing was a remarkable kind of magic, as a child. It was only later that I came to understand that Alfieri was remarkable precisely because there was no magic; every talent he had, every plan he devised, every word in that brobdingnagian vocabulary of his, was the result of nothing more than hard work and diligence, every day of his life. We remember a man who, through his selfless service, through always striving to be the best he could possibly be, inspires us all even now.”

Florizel Diite, at Alfieri's funeral

“Some say that our name is presumptuous, true – but here at the Alfieri School of Butlering, we believe it is perfectly fitting to aspire to the peak of professionalism and integrity with which that name is synonymous. The stories people tell of the legendary butler-diplomat are perhaps partly exaggerated, yes – the tale that tells of him carrying a jar of marmalade through a warzone because Master Florizel had requested it for breakfast is a particularly, ah, florid example – but those of us who had the privilege of knowing him speak of someone wise, talented, dutiful and brilliant. A true gentleman's gentleman should be willing, as our illustrious-yet-humble namesake was, to lay down their lives for those they are duty-bound to protect.”

Pennyworth, Head Instructor at the Alfieri School

“The world is watching. See how we negotiate? This is how it's done in Esharia. If Orrium chooses open warfare in spite of how very reasonable we're being, doesn't that demonstrate how unreasonable, how erratic, such a declaration of war would be? To deal with us means trade, prosperity, reason; does Orrium want to show those watching that it only knows how to deal through bloodshed and treachery? Who would ally themselves with Orrium under those circumstances? Think, Empress Alba, very carefully about the message you're sending out…”

An account of Alfieri's speech to Empress Alba Leocadio, shortly before the outbreak of war. Often found in International Relations textbooks.
