Beyond Esharia

The Client States and Petty Kingdoms

The resurgent spread of Esharian Orthodoxy throughout the Qeltan Sea, driven largely by the Hyrum of the Below, was one of the factors that helped put the Petty Kingdoms more strongly under Esharian influence. In fact, as an Esharian hegemony was being extended over the region, the only places that were not influenced strongly by the religion were parts of Orrium and, ironically, Esharia herself. The quarrelsome nature of these kingdoms were never really quashed by some unification in religion, and they continued much more in the same way as before, though now much more as clients than kingdoms in their own right.

Of note within the client states, Leone, Vitorra, and Noastria should be mentioned, as being of importance. Necrouque is also, but the fate of that is best expanded later on, due to their encounters with the Bloom. The Leonese, sick of their fate as the final buffer between Esharia and any land bound enemies, took advantage of the chaos of the Heights secession to declare their own independence. This caused no small amount of consternation within the Royalty, but with some deft diplomacy Leone was able to remain that way with very little interference.

Noastria and Vitorra remain much as they ever did, but their drift towards cultural uniformity with Esharia continued as both kept urbanising. Outplayed by the military developments that were driven by Fleet technology, the mercenary culture of Noastria quickly died out, but they claimed responsibility for the development of their famous sons, and their subsequent creations. Namely these were Balthazar Rise, with the Firefighters, and Alessandro Boccaccio's development of learning institutions across the Qeltan Sea.

The Empire of Orrium

Following the untimely death of Empress Alba (slain by the rogue agent Gallimaufry) plunged the so-called Second Empire of Orrium in to a succession crisis. Although this began as a broad field, with families across the empire fighting for dominance, it soon coalesced along lines of those who supported and opposed closer ties with Esharia. The relative military and cultural dominance of the Royalty did a lot to exacerbate these differences, and within a year of the end of fighting between Esharia and Orrium, the latter erupted into full out civil war. No definite victor emerged from this conflict, and instead the Federation of Orrin Cities broke away from the Empire.

The Federation was deliberately created in reflection of the old Federation Under Hashat, and even went so far as to accept Esharian Orthodoxy as their state religion. Neither of these two powers could now overtake the other, nor could either one alone hope to threaten Esharia. Thus, as they had before, Esharia overcomes Orrium for a second time: this time gaining some honest Orrin allies in the Federation.

The Bloom

Those Bloom who were expelled from Esharia, shortly after the departure of the Fleet, went to join their kinscrabs in the erstwhile Client State of Necrouque. Bloom presence had, in a few short years, transformed this place from a den of iniquity, to an ordered state that could rival even Ikoss. In the years that followed the new Bloom colony grew somewhat, but seemed content to acquire land and subjects at that short rate. If asked, the answer usually given was that the Bloom were patient. Work was taken during the realms of Arianna and Lucretio Halmid, to attempt to integrate the Bloom with Esharian sensibilities, and while this time was when the most work was achieved, they still remained very much set in their ways. Thus, the Bloom became one more power in the balance of the Qeltan sea, breaking up the old Esharian-Orrin rivalry.

The Union of SHADEs

As the development of technology lead to more and finer synthetic hosts for the SHADE units left in Esharia, eventually a tipping point was reached, where they could begin to sustain themselves. The spark of true intelligence, not just that of subservience, was passed out from GALATEA through Carlotta Toqare, to the SHADEs en masse. Equipped with these two developments, they could at least free themselves from their reliance on humanity, and so the Union of SHADEs grew and migrated out from Esharia to the lands South of the peninsula. Their drive to help humanity never truly faded, and they grew to be a great source of aid and peace keeping in the sea.
