A More True History

Most of the history provided in the wiki was entirely accurate, if incomplete at times. Here provided is a summary of a few of the more obscure bits of history, that was mostly discovered after the start of the game.

The Ancient Past

  • An ancient race discovered that the universe split into a multitude of others when each event went one way or another. This populated the multiverse with a practically infinite number of versions of itself.
  • When this race discovered how to travel between parallel universes in this multiverse, an opportunity presented itself to them.
  • They seeded a planet with life, having the technology and resources to do that, and left an isolated machine station to observe all life that sprang from the proto-humans that the world was seeded with. See the metaphysics page for more info on that.
  • This machine station is what was rediscovered as the core found under The Heights.
  • They then stood back from the planet, knowing that they could travel to an unending number of outcome states of this experiment: which was to study how life, and civilisation, grew and developed.
  • This early start point led, by the simple guarantee of the law of very large numbers to produce Esharia, all the civilisations that made up the Fleet, and many more besides.

The History of the Fleet and the Sepulchre

  • The Infinite was the first bioship built, by an instance of humanity that was in many ways the successor of the ancient race that populated the planet.
  • They too came to similar discoveries about the nature of the multiverse, and wished to discover what it held, and what other people may exist upon it.
  • They inherited the experiment of their conceptual parents, and are evaluating it in their own way.
  • The travels of the Infinite both filled the Fleet with more who would join it, and changed the way they interacted with the world they came across.
  • Attempts to help the dying world of the P9 backfired catastrophically as the technology (originally viewed as life support) given by them was reverse engineered by the paranoid and self-destructive Sepulchre.
  • This lead to a great loss of life among the Fleet, and the imprisoning of a dozen Sepulchre for further study, by the Archivists of the Infinite who were now much more reticent to interfere with the business of worlds they came to.
  • So the Fleet carried on their journey to P39 - Esharia.
  • But behind them, the Sepulchre did not die.
  • They worked furiously to reverse engineer both the technology of the Infinite and that of the ancient race, to create the vast black ship seen coming through the Second Breach.
  • This burned up the central processing core when used to punch through between worlds, but move much faster than the Fleet.
  • The Sepulchre were now single minded in their desire to show the pain they had felt to both the Fleet, and those who had created the world which gave rise to them.
