Prospero Fontana, of the Flawless Quill

“Recent historical and literary research suggests that such beloved plays as The Lion’s Share, The Tragedie of Doctor Valentine, and A Butterfly in Winter were not in fact written by Malvolio Fortuna but his contemporary Prospero Fontana.

Several candidates chose to wildly extrapolate from this and connect the plays to events in Fontana’s personal life. This can potentially be attributed to the glamour and allure of Fontana’s life as opposed to Fortuna’s considerably more ordinary biography.

While inventive, we would discourage such approaches. Scholarly consensus is that Malvolio Fortuna was the sole author of these plays. Students should think carefully before arguing otherwise, as evidence to the contrary is widely discredited.

Others made improbable conjectures based on scant evidence of a relationship between Malvolio Fortuna and Cece De Fabio Diite, known to have acted in several of his plays and thought to be the subject of several sonnets attributed to Fortuna…”
